Who should not use hyaluronic acid-based products?

Hyaluronic acid is generally safe for most people, but there are certain groups who may need to exercise caution:

  1. Individuals with a History of Pancreatic Cancer:
    • Recent studies, such as those from the University of Michigan Health Rogel Cancer Center, have suggested that hyaluronic acid can fuel the growth of pancreatic cancer cells. If you or a close family member has a history of pancreatic cancer, it may be wise to avoid hyaluronic acid-based products.
  2. People with Severe Allergies:
    • Although rare, some people may have allergic reactions to hyaluronic acid, especially if it is derived from animal sources. Symptoms can include redness, itching, and swelling at the application site.
  3. Pregnant or Breastfeeding Women:
    • There is limited research on the safety of hyaluronic acid during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is always best to consult a healthcare provider before using any new skincare or supplement product during these periods.
  4. Individuals with Sensitive Skin:
    • Those with extremely sensitive skin or conditions like eczema or rosacea should perform a patch test before using products containing hyaluronic acid to ensure they do not react adversely.
